The Board of Trustees discusses the developments of the fifth edition of the Sharjah International Award for Cultural Heritage
introduction
The Board of Trustees of the Sharjah International Award for Cultural Heritage discussed during its meeting today the latest developments in the launch of the fifth edition of the Sharjah International Award for Heritage. The Board, headed by Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Award, discussed the topics on the agenda during the meeting held at the UNESCO Regional Hall at the Arab Heritage Center affiliated with the Institute. The Board members praised the pioneering role of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage in maintaining the continuity of the award through its previous sessions and the foreseeable prospects for the new session, including cultural and scientific programs, awareness campaigns for the award and promotional tours, in addition to the timetable for announcing the launch of the new session. The Board agreed on a number of topics to advance the award to take its place on the global level, especially since the award is considered the first Arab award to adopt this international approach in all its fields. Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam said: “The meeting discussed the general policies on which the award is based, the goals it seeks to achieve, the practical and technical aspects of nomination, submission mechanisms, nomination conditions, arbitration stages, its timelines, and other matters related to the essence of the award. The timetable for the fifth session of the award and the proposed list of members of the arbitration committee were also reviewed.”
Details
He added that the award aims to create an environment that nurtures the sustainability of cultural heritage, promotes human heritage, honours successful efforts and supports inspiring initiatives locally, regionally and internationally. It is noteworthy that the Sharjah International Award for Cultural Heritage is an international award of appreciation with standardized scientific standards granted by the Institute to individuals, groups or projects. Its main goal is to appreciate the efforts made in preserving, protecting, studying and ensuring the continuity of cultural heritage. It is divided into three fields: best practices in preserving cultural heritage elements, best narrators “living human treasures” and best research and studies in cultural heritage. These fields include 9 categories and 3 categories in each local, Arab and international field. The Sharjah Institute created the “Sharjah International Award for Cultural Heritage” to be held annually since 2016. Since the first session, the award has achieved a lot of qualitative interest in its various branches and its local, Arab and international branches, celebrating a group of experts, specialists and researchers who have dedicated their lives to serving, preserving and protecting cultural heritage and have achieved the best preservation practices. Their experiences have constituted milestones locally, Arab and internationally.
